• prove that a simple and transparent method of converting an inkjet printer to flat-feed and 3D configurations is possible
• create a mostly printer-independent framework for conversion and control
• maintain system transparancy (the computer that provides models to the printer should not need to know that it is printing to a modified machine)
• use commonly available control systems, supporting hobbyist suppliers where possible
• use open-source software where possible
